who_contest prompt, "first trip."
Whispers followed her as she walked down the street. They filled the air when she passed office cubicles but fell silent when she glanced in their direction. She tried to block them out. The bless her heart’s, and the time’s just gonna pass her by’s made the pain grow deeper. But, a smile grew every time she thought about him.
How could anyone compete with who her dreams were filled with? With, what she almost had?
That’s not to say that she hadn’t tried—or that her mother hadn’t tried. A blind date almost every weekend was not her idea of a good time, but it got her mind off of a project that had been progressing far too slowly. So far, she had been stood up five times, met three drunkards, and a bloke who ended up marrying the waitress.
But, none of that mattered. Even the decent blokes couldn’t add up to the one she was searching for. When they slid their hand into hers there was no perfect fit. When they wrapped their arms around her there was not jovial warmth. And, if she was distracted enough for them to steal a kiss, there wasn’t the love of a supernova behind it. All that ever met her was a deeper longing, a stronger drive, and another hour lost that she could have spent envisioning him.
She longed for ancient eyes mixed with a boyish charm. A man who ran faster than all the rest, but he kept perfect pace with her. A man who saw the entirety of the universe, but he knew her every detail well enough to carve her in stone. A man with a storm inside, but was soft when his arms circled her waist.
Rose Tyler stepped on to the portal, gripped her TARDIS key and got ready for her first trip.
She was going to find the one.
She was going to find her Doctor.
