Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4| Chapter 5| Chapter 6|
Mum’s image seems slightly hazy on the ancient DVD, but it’s clear enough for me to make out where her eyes were creased ever so slightly from smiling. The same smile that I had seen in pictures from my youth stared back at me, and I longed to touch her face. I longed to fall into her arms and become a child, but she was only an image.
“Hello, Sarah,” Mum greeted, her eyes seeming to lock in mine, but I knew this was not logical. “Or, Tenturnie, if your father has gotten his way. He says it’s a popular name on the planet Gorg and it would be a laugh to name you that.”
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes along with the woman on the monitor. Dad must not have changed much in the years since he was with Mum, but I immediately regretted the thought. He had changed…he had become heart-broken.
“Anyway, if you’re watching this it probably means that I didn’t make it to see you grow up, and that’s fine,” the image of Mum hurried to correct herself and gain her composure, but I could see the sorrow in her eyes. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you for all you’re tumbles and achievements, and oh God, the moments when you grew into a lady and you’re father must have tried to explain through a textbook.”
A sad smile spread across my face, as I remembered my first period, and Dad totally freaked out. His mouth was rambling at speeds that weren’t possible in ultrasonic travel, and his mind racing beyond that. I remember the night that I told him, he stayed in his room for a long time. The soft dulcet tones of his prayers in Gallifrean came to me ears, when I realized that he was just as confused and alarmed by this as I was. It was then that I think I wanted Mum to be there the most.
The image on the screen took a deep breath and brought me back to reality.
“But, still, can’t go back now, can we?” She asked herself, as her gaze lowered and she smiled down at something I couldn’t see. Her arm running across it, and immediately I knew she was stroking her abdomen, and me growing inside her.
“Sarah, I’m sure you know by now, but your father is the most amazing…impossible man in the whole world, but there’s something else you need to know…” Mum paused, her hazel eyes glowed with unshed tears. “He’s fragile. You need to love him. You can lean on him for all your life and he’ll be there for you but in those rare moments, he need to lean on you.”
I nodded at the woman on the screen.
“But, what do I do to help him?” I wanted to scream those words for everyone on the street to hear, but instead they came out in a strained whisper.
“Now, I don’t know if that time is now, or if it happened years ago, or if it’s going to happen,” Mum continued, her foresight amazing and striking fear into me. “But, either way…there’s only one word of advice I can give you.”
“What?” I leaned in close to the screen and placed my palm flat on the image.
“Follow your instincts.”
“How does that help?” I asked quietly.
“And, you’re probably wondering how you can trust your instincts, right?” Mum winked, and I sank down, the word ‘impossible,’ ran through my mind in a continuous loop. “Well, Sarah Smith, you are the daughter of the Oncoming Storm and the Bad Wolf, the child of the Stuff of Legend, and probably on your way to writing a few of your own…And, I believe in you…and so does your father.”
“But…”
“I love you, Sarah,” Mum’s voice was soft as silk and I couldn’t tell if she was speaking to me-me, or the me growing inside her, but I didn’t care.
“I love you too,” I whispered, knowing that there really wasn’t a point to saying those words, but feeling the need to.
“Good-bye.”
“Good-bye, Mum,” I would see her again. Dad promised, we just had to wait and we would, but I still needed to say those words. I had been robbed of them my whole life and now I had the opportunity and I took it.
A final smile swept across Mum’s face as the image faded out. For the first time in seventeen years of my life, I think I felt closure. It had said good-bye to my mother. It wasn’t how I would have liked to say it mind you, but still it was time.
I ejected the DVD from the player and clicked it back into its place in the holder. I put it back into Dad’s box along with all the other things, excluding Mum’s wedding ring and TARDIS key. I held them tightly in my hand until I walked down the steps and into the threshold of the house.
I shoved the box containing both of them into my backpack as Greyson scampered over to me along with Sampson.
“Sorry, guys,” I apologized to them. “But, I think I better handle this one on my own.”
Sampson whimpered and pushed his face against my thighs.
“Shh,” I cooed to him, knowing that Sampson was really Dad’s dog. “I’m going to help him get better, I promise.”
Sampson cocked his head to the side and I knelt down next to him. He put his paw on my left knee, and I rubbed behind his ears before moving my fingers across my chest in a smooth motion.
“Cross my heart.”

It’s ten past pix at night, but the sun is still shining brightly through the clouds when I reach the hospital for the umpteenth time since Dad had been put in there. I chain my bike to one of the post and walk inside, Gareth meeting me in the door way as I try to slide past.
“Hey, Sarah,” he greeted with a grin.
“Hi, Gareth,” I reply, as I try to keep moving, not wanting to be rude, but not wanting to waste time either.
He held out a hand and caught me by my shoulder.
“Lilly is going home for a few days today,” Gareth told me, happiness dripping from his words. “She wants to see you before she goes, but I told her you weren’t here, but now that you are, would you mind…”
He didn’t have to finish the sentence; I knew what he was going to ask. The weight of Mum’s wedding ring and key seemed to grow in my bag, but I nodded.
“Of course I will,” I replied, forcing a smile. That’s what Dad would have done.
Gareth gave me his thinks and well wished to Dad before pointing me in the direction of Lilly’s room.

I knocked on the wooden door, and it swung open almost immediately, Mr. and Mrs. Johansson were there this time. Lilly, stood behind them, gripping her father’s hand, but when she saw me she smiled and released it.
“You’re here,” she said cheerfully.
“Of course I am,” I replied bending down to her level and running my hand over her shoulders. “I couldn’t let my bestest buddy leave without a proper good-bye could I?”
Lilly smiled at me and caught me in a hug.
“I’m glad you came,” she told me. “Thank you.”
“No prob,” I said with a smile. “I needed to see my dad again any way.”
“The Doctor’s not better yet?” Lilly asked, her lower lip quivering in a small pout.
I shook my head. “I’m afraid not.”
“Can I see him?”
I looked up at Lilly’s parents. They each nodded their heads in consent and I gave them a half smile in return.
“Alright,” I told her. “But, before we go in there—” I locked my eyes onto hers, speaking to her in serious tones. “You need to know that’s he’s really hurt, and he’s sleeping a lot. He woke up this morning, but he was very confused. He…he…might not remember you.” He didn’t remember me.
“But, he’s going to get better right?” Lilly asked
“Yeah,” I whispered, taking her hand and leading her through down the hallway and to Dad’s room.
